Mourning Mercaz HaRav

I am haunted by images of the massacre at Mercaz HaRav Yeshiva in Jerusalem, where eight young boys - some about the age of my oldest son - were gunned down by an Arab terrorist from East Jerusalem.

I'm haunted by the idea of living side-by-side with a society that can celebrate such vicious, senseless violence.

And I'm haunted by the fact that some secular Israeli Jews can distance themselves from this tragedy because of the religious ideology of Mercaz HaRav, a school that has been called the flagship institution of religious Zionism.

I'm a religious Zionist though my lifestyle, and the lifestyle of Mercaz HaRav students, are worlds apart. In this attack, I feel that the terrorists have hit at my very heart.

Incidentally, one of the young victims, Avraham David Moses, was the nephew of one of my daughter's teachers. Israel is a very small country.
