An Inconvenient Truth
Arlene Kushner is the mother of a friend of mine. She also happens to be a respected investigative journalist, covering issues related to Israeli security for publications including Azure, Commentary and the National Review. During President Bush's recent visit, one of Arlene's employers, decided her report "Fatah as 'Moderate' - A Hard Look Post-Annapolis" would be important food for thought for the many reporters camped out in Jerusalem to cover the Bush visit.
Although many streets were closed down in Jerusalem during Bush's stay, there was no law curtailing freedom of speech. But apparently, there are laws, and there are unwritten laws. Policemen detained the two people handing out this report, taking them to the Russian Compound police station. Once there, they were released without charge, but the report they had been handing out was comfiscated as "seditious" material.
A sad day for so-called Israeli democracy.
